Family Law Clerk required

Salary between £30,000 to £40,000 per annum

Our client is KBW Chambers - a dynamic medium sized set of Chambers with over 45 barristers and King’s Counsel. Chambers specialises in Family, Crime, Police, Inquests, Judicial Review and Human Rights Based Claims as well as Civil Law. Chambers benefits from a highly responsive clerking team comprised of six clerks. KBW Chambers is based in a restored Grade II listed building in the Round Foundry Complex in the attractive south bank area, which is close to Leeds train station and a range of shops, restaurants and pubs.

KBW Chambers seeks to recruit a Junior Family Clerk to help continue to build on the success and growth of a strong family law team which specialises exclusively in private and public children law work. The team, which includes those with mixed practices, is made up of approximately 20 barristers including Queen’s Counsel, Recorders and Deputy District Judges sitting in family law and. The team have been recognised in the Legal 500 and individual members have been ranked as top tier leading Counsel in family law.

The daily tasks of a Junior Family Clerk at KBW Chambers are interesting and wide ranging.  KBW strive to create a supportive and collaborative working environment to ensure the continued development of Chambers and members’ busy practices.

Duties will include:

  • Case administration, including booking in cases, conferences and meetings. Liaising and communicating with professional clients and courts and maintaining the highest standards of client care. Undertaking these tasks shall involve working alongside and supporting those clerking the criminal and civil teams and assisting the Senior Clerk with diary and case management. A collaborative approach to case administration will therefore be required

  • Advising Solicitors and other clients or potential clients on appropriate Counsel, their availability and applicable fee rates

  • To answer queries or requests for information by clients

  • Agreeing dates for the delivery of briefs and updated papers, as required

  • Proactive diary management, namely chasing instructions, papers etc on a timely basis

  • Keeping members of Chambers proactively informed as to their diaries and papers

  • Assisting with further work generation, including increasing the team’s exposure to promising professional clients locally in Leeds and also circuit wide

  • Marketing activities and strategy including the use of social media and all available professional outlets, to develop new business and retain existing clients

  • Attendance at internal and external events as directed by the Head of the Family Team and on own initiative

  • Working with the team and individual members to develop business and team objectives through attending events, key client meetings and networking

  • Gathering relevant information prior to estimating, negotiating and agreeing fees

  • Fees negotiation, including the finalisation of funding for cases

  • Preparation of tenders, service level agreements and any panel applications agreed by the Family Team

  • Billing fees for work done, in particular FGS, FAS and other publicly funded work

  • Preparation and conducting of regular family practice chats with tenants

  • Daily practice management ensuring the fair allocation of work to members and the appropriate choice of member in line with their experience and year of call

  • General administrative/clerking duties as required

  • Additional tasks as may from time to time be required by the Management Committee and/or the Senior Clerk


  • Minimum of 5 years previous relevant Family Law clerking experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Firm understanding of Children Law work

  • Experience in practice development

  • Experience in negotiating case fees

  • Experience of business development and client relationship management is preferable but is not a strict requirement

  • Working knowledge of FAS, FGF and outer scheme billing to maximise income to members of Chambers

  • Billing experience is desirable

  • Being fully conversant with Direct Access procedures and policies

  • IT proficiency and knowledge of LEX, Outlook, Dropbox, Word and Excel

  • Attention to detail and being comfortable handling a variety of duties

  • Calm, patient and flexible approach to working in a collaborative and busy environment
